Imo Govt. To Focus On Improving Education Sector

The Imo State Governor has promised that his rescue mission agenda for the next four years would be centred on the education sector.

Governor Rochas Okorocha made the pledge at the official commissioning of a new staff office complex at the premises of the Imo State Universal Basic Education Board (IMSUBEB) along Port Harcourt Road in Owerri, the state's capital.

Focusing his rescue mission agenda on education, according to him, would enhance the welfare of teachers and other staff in the sector.

The Governor added that the development would also consolidate on the qualitative free education given to students across the state.

He said that his rescue mission agenda had positively changed the lives of people in the state in the past four years and expressed optimism that 2016 would be a year of consolidation and continuity of all the programmes embarked upon in his first tenure.

He also urged all workers in the state to imbibe a new spirit towards their duties in the new year and not to take the goodwill of the Imo State government for granted.

In her remark, the Executive Chairperson of IMSUBEB, Mrs Getrude Oduka, said that the provision of a conducive atmosphere for teaching and learning process as well as administrative activities by the state government was indeed a proof of its commitment to improving the welfare of workers in the state.

Thanking the Governor for the efforts, she also disclosed that the Imo State government had put measures in place for 2016, to ensure that they consolidate on achievements made previously in the education sector.

Etisalat continued its time tested practice of supporting the creative arts when it sponsored Avalanche- The Kings of Dance to encourage talent development especially the growth of the Nigerian entertainment and arts industry.

Avalanche, The Kings of Dance which took place at the Muson Centre, Lagos, showcased star studded cast performances from celebrities like Ali Baba, Ireti Doyle, Victor Olaotan, Linda Ejiofor, Cool Fm's Manny, Sensei Uche from City FM, Showman and a host of others.

Amnesty: FG Begins Biometric Verification Of Ex-Militants In Niger Delta

The Special Adviser to the President and Coordinator of the Amnesty Program, Brigadier-General Paul Boroh (Rtd), says there are no plans to end the amnesty programme for ex-militants in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

Brigadier-General Boroh (Rtd) made this remark during the verification exercise of hundreds of ex-militants captured in the programme.

According to the Special Adviser, the Federal Government intends to get rid of alleged ghost names registered in the programme and sustain prompt payments for the ex-militants and other programmes of training and empowerment, as stated in the agenda of the amnesty.

Brig General Boroh (Rtd) also revealed that the Federal Government recognises the importance of the programme to the sustenance of peace and security in the region.

Barcelona’s forward, Lionel Messi, has won the Ballon d’Or award for the world’s best player for the fifth time.

The 28-year-old Argentine clinched the award with 41.33% of the votes while Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo polled 27.76% to get the second position.

Barcelona’s Neymar also got 7.86% of the votes in the third position.

Either Messi or Ronaldo, who became a three-time winner last year, have won the past eight awards.

Barcelona striker Neymar, 23, was the first Brazilian to finish in the top three since Kaka won the 2007 award. He scored 45 goals in 62 games and is joint top scorer in this season’s La Liga with 15, level with team-mate Luis Suarez.

In a congratulatory message Barcelona FC wrote on its facebook page: “Thank you Leo for making your dreams come true”.

In the women category, United States midfielder Carli Lloyd, who scored a hat-trick in the World Cup final, won the award.

England coach Mark Sampson was beaten to the women’s football coach of the year award by USA boss Jill Ellis.
